Once the task of transporting refugees by sea from the east and accommodating them in Schleswig-Holstein had been completed, the situation as far as Hamburg was concerned, would be entirely altered, and once that had been accomplished I had no intention whatever of insisting upon further and futile defence. But at the moment it was still vital to hold the Elbe front against the British, so that the reception area behind it could be retained in our hands. Above all it was essential that the bridges over the Elbe in Hamburg should not fall into British hands. It was also highly desirable that the line defending them should be sited as far to the south-west as possible in order to save the town and its inhabitants from becoming involved in the subsequent battle.20
